I began my career in the business world. After obtaining a business administration
degree, I spent eight years working in finance. In 1999 I left the business world to pursue my passion for teaching. I obtained a teaching credential from California State University, San Marcos
and accepted a job at St. Peter’s Catholic School where I taught fifth grade
for three years. Feeling as though my
potential was not being fully utilized, I accepted a job teaching math and
science to students in an underachieving middle school.
As a life-long learner I pursued a Master’s degree in
Teaching, Learning, and Leadership through California State University, San
Marcos while taking on additional responsibilities including leading the sixth
grade math team. These responsibilities
included; grade-level curriculum preparation, lead instructor in Professional
Learning Communities, and mentoring new teachers. Additionally, I am a member of the
district-wide Curriculum Council which is a group that reviews and writes
curriculum to ensure that current district standards are in accordance with
national standards. To accompany my
Master’s degree, I completed the curriculum for National Board
Certification in Early Adolescence Mathematics.
As a teacher I has been honored as a finalist for
California League of Middle School Teacher of the Year and was awarded Math
Teacher of the Year by the Greater San Diego Mathematics Council. In addition, I been asked to participate as an
instructor in training videos for the San Diego County Office of Education and
the Vista Unified School District. I have also served as a Coordinating Teacher for student teaching
programs through several colleges within the San Diego area. Upon receiving my doctorate in educational leadership, I intend to focus on ensuring that new teachers are properly
motivated with a passion for teaching and the desire to meet
the needs of the diverse students they will face in the classroom.
I am currently the Math Coach at a middle school in San Diego County. I am also in the process of obtaining my doctorate in Educational Leadership. My dissertation is titled " Restructuring Leadership for 21st Century Schools: How Transformational Leadership and Trust Cultivate Teacher Leadership".
